About Omulu Capoeira Guanabara
Omulu Capoeira Guanabara is an international partnership that has two headquarters. One is based in the United States, in San Francisco, California, directed by world-renowned Mestre Preguiça, a student of the famed Mestre Bimba. The other headquarters is based in Stockholm, Sweden, led by Mestre Di Mola. The two function as one, and provide one of the world's largest networks of affiliated capoeira academies, with branches in Brazil, the U.S., Canada, Sweden, Venezuela, Mexico, and Japan.

The mission of Omulu Capoeira Guanabara is to promote the art of capoeira around the world through development of high-quality training academies, professional performance groups, and community culture and education programs. As a non-profit organization, Omulu Capoeira is specifically dedicated to promoting capoeira education as a tool to empower youth.

Capoeira is a collective art form that brings together dance, music, acrobatics and martial arts. Created four centuries ago by African slaves in Brazil in their struggle for freedom and survival, capoeira was still illegal to practice until the 1930s, but since then has acquired enormous popularity among people of all ages and backgrounds in Brazil and throughout the world. Practiced in a communal setting within a circle of players, or "roda," and set to a hypnotic, pulsing rhythm, capoeira calls for intuition, skill, grace and physical strength.

Since its creation, Omulu Capoeira Guanabara has taught thousands of students, performed throughout the Bay Area (and across the world), and collaborated with several renowned arts groups from Brazil and the U.S. The group conducts public classes and workshops for children and adults which are made possible by donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Omulu Capoeira also works with disadvantaged urban youth through a special free program in the San Francisco Bay Area called Community Action Project, or CAP. CAP shares the teachings and traditions of capoeira as a tool to help young people cope with a difficult world.
